  If I walk away from JW - I lose EVERYTHING. All family, my children, everything. And I have nothing else. I would have to start life over. So I don't want to take this step until I have absolutely no choice. I understand completely it is cognitive dissonance and believe me, it drives me into deep depression and causes me no end of mental anguish.

  dear friends,.

  much of what we do on a daily basis is routine and of no particular, earth-shaking importance.

  however, after reviewing letters of family going back to wwii, it is fascinating to read what dad was doing on board the aircraft carrier in the pacific on any old day, what mom was cooking on her ever-steaming range, how i was dealing with the roller coaster of emotion at bethel [mom saved all my letters], how nana wrote that she would not study with the witnesses [per my request] but 'here are some mittens i knitted for you when you canvass new york with your magazines.

  "High" education

  did any of you guys disregard the wt recommendations and pursue a career.

  We have several in our family that are now into their late 60's. They are still working hard physically. They have no retirement and are paying the high cost of medical insurance due to being self employed. These were the ones that were told (via JW literature) back in 1969 that they would not need education because the end was sooo close. These ones chose to pioneer. Are they resentful? Yes they are. We hear it all of the time. They are now encouraging us to get our children educated so they can support themselves. ToesUp

  I am in concert with the above, and it all applies to me, excepting being resentful.

  I had wonderful experiences as a pioneer, elder, and Bethelite serving in a foreign-language congregation. I was a poster child for the "Truth" because I gave up college upon baptism. Nonetheless, an educator in the field of fine arts [sans degree], I fervently believed in education and touted its benefits and virtues while an active Witness. To make ends meet, I still do hard physical work in maintenance, which I have loved since childhood.

  There's something to be said for autodidacticism . . .

  Nothing much today happening because a dead battery in a vehicle quashes efforts to travel far. Did get in a good walk, however, and saw friends at home and en route.

  Playing a DVD on computer or player?

  initially, i was surprised that the drop-down list on google re: the above is so long.. my mac plays movies flawlessly, but my dvd player does and doesn't.

  this appears to be a widespread problem.

  i get the problem with cranky players, given code reading, regional restrictions, unreliable communication between an older tv (mine) and player, etc.. my question is this: what is the makeup of a computer that allows it to play movies (even somewhat scratched discs) that my player won't?

  Yeah, can't work it! Me neither.

  So glad I kept my VHS tapes. Wish new movies were still available on tape. After 30 years, tapes still play. Sure, not with the clarity and special features of DVD, but they WORK!
